BREAST AESTHETICS
Breast Reduction
Having breasts larger than the ideal proportion can cause not only aesthetic concerns but also various health problems for many women. Common issues include back, neck, and shoulder pain; irritation under the breasts; difficulty finding suitable clothing; and restrictions in physical activity. Breast reduction surgery helps achieve lighter, more balanced, and aesthetically pleasing breasts by removing excess tissue, fat, and skin.

What Is Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction (reduction mammoplasty) is a surgical procedure that reduces the volume of overly large breasts while reshaping and improving their symmetry. The operation serves both aesthetic and functional purposes, significantly alleviating physical discomforts while enhancing appearance.
Preoperative Considerations
- A breast ultrasound or mammogram should be performed before surgery to thoroughly assess the condition of the breast tissue.
- Aspirin, blood-thinning medications, and certain herbal supplements should be avoided approximately two weeks before the operation.
- Tobacco use can negatively affect wound healing; therefore, quitting smoking at least one week before surgery is recommended.
- Supplements such as high-dose vitamin E, ginseng, and green tea, which may have blood-thinning effects, should also be avoided.
Will There Be Scars?
In breast reduction surgery, incisions are usually made around the areola, vertically downward, and along the breast crease (in an inverted “T” or “anchor” shape). Over time, these scars fade and become less noticeable. The lines around the areola and under the breast blend naturally with the skin, making them increasingly discreet.
Procedure and Recovery
- The surgery typically lasts between 2–4 hours and is usually performed under general anesthesia.
- A one-night hospital stay may be required.
- Mild swelling, bruising, and pain are expected during the first few days.
- Most patients can return to their daily routine within 7–14 days.
- Heavy physical activities and sports should be avoided for about 4–6 weeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is anesthesia used during the operation?
Yes — breast reduction surgery is most often performed under general anesthesia. However, in certain cases, it may be done with local anesthesia combined with sedation.
Are the results permanent?
The reduction achieved through surgery is permanent. However, natural aging, weight fluctuations, and hormonal changes over time may alter the breast shape to some degree.
When can I return to my normal daily routine?
You can usually resume light activities within 1–2 weeks after surgery. After the stitches are removed, it is recommended to wear a supportive bra and gradually return to your normal activities under your doctor’s guidance.
